As a self-confessed coffee addict, the health benefits of coffee are of great interest to me. While this energising and warming drink definitely makes us feel good, is it actually good for us?
Turns out that YES, coffee has some amazing health benefits (THANK GOD!). And I’m going to go through few of them now!
1. Coffee boosts your energy levels
One of my favourite things about coffee is the way it boosts my energy. I drink that warm cup of deliciousness and I feel like I could bounce off the walls (sometimes a little too much).
This is because of a wonderful little substance (which all good coffee lovers are well acquainted with) called caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant, which means that it speeds up the nerve signals between our brain and body. That’s why you feel like you can do, see and be more when you drink coffee – because your nerves are going hammer and tongs due to caffeine.
2. Coffee lowers the risk of diseases
Coffee drinkers have lower levels of certain diseases than the general population (woohoo!).
According to Harvard Health, coffee drinkers have reduced risk of many diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, some cancers and and Type 2 diabetes.
Not only that, but coffee drinkers even have up to 15% less risk of death than the general population! Not bad!
3. Coffee can improve physical performance
Did you know that caffeine is a drug that they monitor at the Olympics? Yes, that’s right! Caffeine is a performance enhancing drug.
According to Sports Dietitians Australia, caffeine (such as that found in coffee) can improve physical performance by reducing the perceived effort of your exercise. That is, it makes it seem easier!
Why not try a cup of coffee before your morning Pilates class? It might spark you up a bit!
Well there you have it, those are just some of the many benefits of coffee drinking. But like everything – there is definitely something called ‘too much of a good thing’. Caffeine is a drug, and so it can have negative effects on your body if you consume too much. Please consult your health care professional if you have any concerns about your coffee drinking!
